'65 in Total Control...You've seen it in many of our ads. You may have even seen it speeding around the corners and down the straightaways at some of the well known tracks in the northeastern United States. Well if you haven't had the pleasure of getting up-close and personal with Mark Dougherty's awesome 1965 Fastback, here's your chance.
Engine/DrivetrainThe heart of this '65 Fastback currently is a 302 out of a '92 Mustang GT. A few minor modifications to the stock 302 and this affordable and very effective engine package was ready to go. Waiting in the wings Mark also has a 351 Windsor with a whole list of goodies, ready to be dropped into place. With the compression at 10.5:1 this 400 plus horsepower 351 should make for a pretty wild ride. A 4 speed Toploader transmission and Ford 9" Detroit Locker rear end with 4:10 gears complete the package. Suspension/ChassisJudging by the way this car corners, you know there has to be something special under it. Sporting our Coil-Over Conversion Kit with 550 lb. springs and adjustable jacking plates at the shock towers, Mark can quickly get his car dialed to perfection on any track. In addition to our tubular upper control arms and our strut rods, our tubular lower control arms are also installed to round out the precision of the front suspension. Keeping the correct line in the corners is a very important aspect of racing. Our manual rack and pinion provides extremely accurate steering while giving feedback as to what the car is doing at any particular moment. A rigid chassis is also a big part of a what gives a vehicle excellent handling characteristics. Begining at the engine compartment, our complete Tower Brace Kit is installed to help keep the shock towers in place. To further strengthen the body our Subframe Connector Kits 1 and 2 were installed. These two TCP kits along with a custom built roll cage, engineered and manufactured by Mark himself, really "tie" the car together to give it a rock solid feel. Wheels/Tires/BrakesThe 3 piece modular 16 x 12 wheels were created by Complete Custom Wheel out of Florida. For rubber Mark turned to Goodyear Eagle racing slicks. (front 26x13x16, rear 27x14x16) This Trans Am Racing style tire and wheel package gives excellent grip. Braking is handled by Wilwood GN III 6 piston calipers matched to a 13" rotor in the front and a set of Wilwood Superlight 4 piston calipers with a 12" rotor for the rear. A Wilwood reverse mount pedal assembly and Tilton Triple Master Cylinder, conviently located visibly in the dash area, take care of the hydraulic portion of the braking system.
BodyMuch of the body has been converted over to fiberglass to trim the weight down and quite effectively at 2600 lbs. The front apron, front fenders, flares and 2 1/2" cowl induction hood are all from Maier Racing (www.maierracing.com). The fiberglass doors, trunk lid and rear bumber came from Unlimited Performance Products (www.up22.com). If you're looking for fiberglass for your Mustang these two companies have quite a bit to choose from. The paint color is a 96' Dodge Viper GTS Blue. These pictures really do not do this paint job justice. For a car that gets regular track use this baby really shines. Come out and see...Mark and his wife Wanda are our North Eastern TCP Representatives and attend many of the SCCA events as well as major Mustang events in the region. If you find yourself out at Watkins Glen, Nelson Ledges, Limerock, Summit Point or any of the other tracks in the area keep your eyes open for Mark and his beautiful '65 Mustang Fastback. |
